Large earthquakes are destructive events that can release the equivalent of the Czechia annual energy consumption within few seconds. 

Several decades of research have shown that reliably predicting large earthquakes is likely not possible. However, useful methods of quantifying earthquake risks and likelihoods have been obtained, and early warning systems as well as other preparatory measures (building codes, emergency plans) have been developed in many countries.
